On Rua do Lavradio in Lapa, Rio Scenarium is both a music venue and a museum of curiosities. The old multi-story mansion is filled with thousands of antiques: furniture, clocks, instruments, lamps and objects from other eras.
It began as an antique shop, on a street known precisely for its antique dealers, and over time started hosting live music. It became one of the symbols of Lapa’s revival and often appears on lists of the world’s most beautiful bars.
The music revolves around samba, choro and gafieira (Brazilian ballroom dancing), with bands on the ground floor and room to dance. The upper floors work as balconies to watch the party from another angle — and to wander among the objects.
The highlight is the atmosphere: listening to samba surrounded by century-old pieces, at one of the street’s most traditional addresses. It is also a good introduction to Lapa nightlife in a more organized setting.
Tips: there is a cover charge and it fills up at weekends, so arrive early or book. Check the night’s lineup before you go and, on the way back, call a car from the door.
