Praça São Salvador

Laranjeiras1.2 km from Mirante

Time Out 2026 Praça São Salvador is part of the magazine’s perfect day in Laranjeiras, named the world’s 17th coolest neighborhood in 2026.

Praça São Salvador is Laranjeiras’ meeting point. Leafy, with a bandstand, a playground and bars all around, it is where the neighborhood gathers to chat, have a beer and listen to music.

Laranjeiras is a traditional residential district of quiet streets and low-rise buildings, and the square is its living room. At weekends families, musicians and neighbors fill the benches and bar tables; on some days, choro and samba circles liven up the bandstand.

A few blocks away is Rua General Glicério, famous for its Saturday market with food stalls and, usually, live chorinho. Together, the square and the market show off neighborhood bohemian life — unhurried and not overrun by tourists.

The highlight is authenticity: this is everyday Rio, with a small-town feel in the middle of the city. It is also a good choice for a night out close to home.

Tips: go in the late afternoon or on Saturday morning, together with the market. The bars around are simple and inexpensive; order a draft beer and a snack and soak up the local atmosphere.
