General Glicério street market

Laranjeiras500 m from Mirante

Time Out 2026 The Saturday market on General Glicério opens the magazine’s perfect day in Laranjeiras, named the world’s 17th coolest neighborhood in 2026.

Every Saturday morning, Rua General Glicério in Laranjeiras turns into a street market full of color and neighbors. It is a few minutes’ walk from Mirante and one of the best ways to see the neighborhood the way its residents live it.

Laranjeiras is one of Rio’s most traditional neighborhoods. Its name (“orange trees”) is said to come from the orange groves that grew in the Carioca River valley in colonial times. Today, among old mansions, low-rise buildings and leafy streets, neighborhood life is still strong — and the market is its best portrait.

The stalls sell fruit, vegetables, fish and flowers, amid the comings and goings of shopping trolleys and the chatter between vendors and customers. Many vendors offer a slice of fruit to taste before you buy, and their calls fill the street. For many residents, it is a fixed Saturday ritual.

The market is also a place to eat: the classic is pastel de feira, a crispy filled pastry, with ice-cold caldo de cana (sugarcane juice). There are other street-food stalls too, for a hearty breakfast or an unhurried snack.

The highlight is the music: a choro group often plays live in the middle of the market, and neighbors stop to listen, sing along and chat. Praça São Salvador, close by, rounds off the outing with its bars and bandstand.

Tips: go between mid and late morning, when the market is at its liveliest. Bring small change and a shopping bag, try the seasonal fruit and finish with a draft beer at Praça São Salvador. It is a slice of everyday life in Laranjeiras.
