Tijuca waterfalls

Tijuca National Park9.2 km from Mirante

Inside the Tijuca Forest, the waterfalls are one of Rio’s most refreshing outings. There are falls for every taste: some right beside the road, others at the end of short trails, always surrounded by Atlantic Forest and much cooler than the seafront.

The most famous is the Cascatinha Taunay, a waterfall of about 35 meters right by the road. It is named after French painter Nicolas-Antoine Taunay, who came to Brazil with the French Artistic Mission in 1816 and lived nearby. Today it is one of the most photographed stops in the park.

Short trails from the park roads lead to other smaller falls, such as the Cachoeira das Almas. These are paths through the forest, with streams, rocks and plenty of shade, which can be done in a few minutes or linked into a longer walk.

Bathing is allowed only at certain spots: follow the park signs and the rangers’ instructions. The water comes down from mountain springs and is usually very cold, and wet rocks are slippery — take extra care near the falls.

The highlight is being in nature just a few kilometers from the city. Along the way you are likely to meet capuchin monkeys, coatis and many birds, as well as butterflies, bromeliads and huge Atlantic Forest trees. It is an outing that suits children and adults alike and fits into a morning.

Tips: go in the morning, when it is quieter and cooler. Bring water, insect repellent and shoes with good grip, and do not feed the animals. Avoid the trails after heavy rain, and combine the visit with the Capela Mayrink and the Açude da Solidão nearby.
